About the words
Promises, and Miles to Go
On the darkest evening of the year, a man stops his horse beside a snowy wood, just to look. The poem is four quiet stanzas of watching. Then, in the last one, the pull of the woods meets the pull of obligation, and Frost does something small and brilliant: he says the final line twice.
Frost wrote it in June 1922, after staying up all night finishing another poem, and later said it came in a few minutes, as if he'd had a hallucination. Whether the sleep is rest or something larger, the poem never tells us. It is a very quiet argument for going on, and it has worn well for a century.
Why we chose it: it is the rare line that makes duty sound as lovely as the thing you are leaving behind.
